SUMMARY:Katie Lewis - Cotton Subsurface Fertigation
DESCRIPTION:Research Series Webinar\nNovember 15\, 10:00 AM CST\nDeveloping a Fertigation Strategy for Cotton using Subsurface Drip Irrigation \nDr. Katie Lewis\, Associate Professor Soil Chemistry and Fertility.\nTexas A&M AgriLife Research\nTexas Tech University \nThe Fluid Fertilizer Foundation is excited that Dr. Katie Lewis will be presenting a 30-minute webinar updating information on her project “Developing a Fertigation Strategy for Cotton using Subsurface Drip Irrigation.”  The Research Series Webinars present information from FFF sponsored research that influences proper nutrient management and crop production. Join us for the free\, live\, online event. The webinar will also be available on the FFF website after the event. \nBiography\nDr. Katie Lewis joined TTU in September 2014. She received her bachelor’s degree in Chemistry\, cum laude\, in May 2008 from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville\, TX. Her master’s and doctorate degrees\, both in Soil Science were obtained from Texas A&M University\, College Station\, TX. Katie has a joint appointment with Texas A&M AgriLife Research and teaches Soil Fertility class in the Fall Semester. \nDr. Lewis’ goal is to “establish a nationally recognized Soil Chemistry and Fertility Program based on innovative research and competitive graduate student training.” \nResearch Interests: Soil Fertility\, Biogeochemical Cycling\, Sustainable Crop Production\, Soil Microbiology\, Environmental Reclamation\, Organic Soil Amendments \nProject Summary \nWhat is the best strategy to fertilize a cotton crop using a subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) system? This question is asked quite often particularly by farmers who are new to SDI. Their question more specifically is related to the number of fertilizer applications – should they spoon feed their crop or provide the crop with less frequent larger doses of fertilizer. Not only does this question get asked by farmers but also by irrigation companies. To the best of our knowledge\, data does not exist to answer this question specifically related to cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) and phosphorus (P) fertigation; therefore\, this research is needed to provide farmers with the best approach to fertigation with SDI. This research focuses on developing a nitrogen (N) and P fertigation strategy that optimizes cotton yield and increases nutrient use efficiency and fertilizer return on investment. \nRegistration is Free! SUMMARY:Raj Khosla\, Kansas State University. Increasing Profitability & Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Raj Khosla will be presenting his 2020 data from the project “Precision Nitrogen Management Strategies to Increase Profitability and Sustainability of Irrigated Cropping Systems” \nIn traditional farming systems farmers choose to manage nitrogen (N) fertilizer at a uniform rate across a field based on an average yield goal. Dr. Steve Stokes\, the opening Keynote speaker at a recent Info-Ag conference made a profound statement: “When you manage the “average” you miss your target 100% percent of the time”. Management decisions based on the field average results in significant over and under-application of N in a majority of the field. There is strong evidence that spatial and temporal variability exists in crop yield and hence N distribution and availability to plants (i.e.\, variability across the field within a given growing season and variably over time for a given field location). While this poses a challenge it also provides an opportunity to quantify\, record\, and manage N fertilizer both spatially and temporally. \nThere are opportunities in irrigated cropping systems to take advantage of precision N management from pre-plant N application through mid- to late-season N application. It is well documented that the efficiency of N fertilizer is reduced when farmers use a single application (either pre-plant or at-planting). This is due to the higher potential of N losses when N is in the soil solution prior to when the plant needs it. Split applications of urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) fertilizers can address temporal variability in crop needs and enhance N use efficiency while reducing N loss in the biosphere. \nFluid fertilizers are easy to apply for farmers and give versatility for optimal spatial and temporal management. \nThe overall objective of this research project is to increase the productivity\, profitability\, and sustainability of irrigated cropping systems in the western US. Specific subobjectives are: \ni.	To quantify improvements in crop yield and N use efficiency—among single and multiple (split) applications of fluid N fertilizers—resulting from the implementation of a precision N management strategy comprised of management zones coupled with in-season crop sensing to address spatial and temporal sources of variability.\nii.	To quantify improvements in average net returns and the variability of net returns—also among single and multiple (split) applications of fluid N fertilizers—resulting from the implementation of a precision N management strategy comprised of management zones coupled with in-season crop sensing to address spatial and temporal sources of variability. \n0.5 units of CCA Sustainability Credits are available \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Josh McGrath\, University of Kentucky. Starter Fertilizer Placement
DESCRIPTION:Modifying Starter Fertilizer Placement to Increase Effectiveness \nDr. McGrath will be reporting on his Fluid Fertilizer Foundation sponsored study Modifying Starter Fertilizer Placement to Increase Effectiveness. This is first year FFF has been involved with this project and we are excited to see how this novel research is playing out. \nTraditionally\, growers have managed fertilizer placement at planting in two dimensions\, namely manipulating fertilizer distance from the seed in the horizontal and vertical directions. However\, recent advances in fertilizer delivery systems allow producers to manage fertilizer distance from the seed down the row\, in the direction of planting adding a third dimension to the question of how fertilizer placement might influence rate decisions. New fluid fertilizer application technologies allow farmers to manipulate fertilizer placement down the row by pulsing fluid fertilizer. Pulsed fertilizer systems allow the user to control the distance of the fertilizer pulse from the seed. \nThis study seeks to compare continuous starter fertilizer to pulsed starter fertilizer\, for both seed-row and offset placement. The goal is to provide growers with information on how this technology interacts with rate and fertilizer source (with varying amounts of salt). \nClick here to register for the webinar.

SUMMARY:Scott Nelson Research Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Scott Nelson presents his work on Overcoming the Yield Gap in Corn Following Cover Crops with Fluid Fertilizer. The project The hypothesis and logic of this project are as follows: Cover crops and high residue no-till management similarly immobilize nitrogen and other key macro nutrients during early yield formation stages in corn. This immobilization can reduce yield\, and therefore prevent farmers from using these practices with corn. Preliminary observations and previous research suggest that this immobilization can be overcome with a starter fertilizer or by using improved fertilizer placement techniques. In this experiment we will strive to elucidate best practices for nitrogen management in corn following a cover crop with the hypothesis that corn yield can be increased provided there is adequate nitrate available to the crop during early yield formation stages. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Research Series Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Combining 4R Nutrient Management and Ecological Intensification to Advance Corn Production. \nJeff Coulter & Jeffrey A Vetsch Univ. of Minnesota \nThe goal of ecological intensification (EI) in crop production is to accelerate yield gains in a sustainable and environmentally conscious manner by utilizing the best science and management available. There is great potential to link EI and 4R nutrient stewardship to lead agriculture to a more productive\, profitable\, and sustainable future. Many management practices have been shown to increase yield of corn (maize)\, including hybrid selection\, planting rate\, residue management\, tillage system\, water management\, pesticides\, and nutrient management. Some of these yield-enhancing practices have seen widespread adoption while others have not. Research and extension are needed to demonstrate the potential gains in yield and economic net return that could be attained by corn producers who adopt these and other practices.\nThe Global Maize Project (GMP) is a research project initiated by the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI). It compares the typical farmer practice (FP) to EI as determined by local agronomists and scientists. Combining the concepts of EI and 4R nutrient stewardship is essential for advancing sustainable intensification of corn production.\nThe goal of this research is to address the following questions that have been repeatedly asked by farmers and the ag industries they support:\n1. What yield levels are possible in Minnesota?\n2. How far is current production from that which is possible?\n3. Is our current scientific knowledge\, when properly integrated\, capable of creating marked improvements in system performance over current farmer practices?\n4. Can current university nutrient recommendations attain and maintain the high yields that are possible? \nClick here or on the Website link below to register.
